 Get it right HERE

From Pens of my friends Joseph Browning and Suzi Yee comes this adventure!
The plot according to RPGNOW:

Advanced Adventures #10: The Lost Keys of Solitude is an OSRIC(TM) module designed for 6-8 adventurers of levels 6-10.
Clocks in at 28 pages but be sure to print out the maps separates

While traveling through the foothills of the Garvain Mountains, your party found refuge for the night in a hermit's cave. In the morning, you wake to find the hermit and all his possessions gone, all except for two golden tiles: one embossed with the image of a bull with his hrons down and ready to charge, the other a tiger poised and ready to pounce. When the tiles are placed next to each other so that the bull and tiger face one another, the embossed images move, fusing the two pieces into one. The newly created image is the bull and tiger locked in combat. The fused piece is easily separated, and when separated, the images of the bull and tiger return to normal. Beside the two golden tiles lies a crudely-drawn map of the area with a path marked through valleys and passes ending at an "x" labeled "Solitude."

What terrors or treasure could be found in Solitude?

Ecology of the 'Vampires of the Locust Star' & ' Nosferatu: Plague of Terror' Graphic Novel

A splash page from the NOSFERATU: PLAGUE OF TERROR Kindle ebook by Rik Levins and Melissa Martin Ellis.
Introduction
Read the first series of articles for this one to make sense right HERE
 The
' Nosferatu: Plague of Terror' graphic novel has been released on digital download. I've been thinking quite a bit about vampires and their kind. Because I'm preparing for a the Splatterpunk VHS game using the Crypts and Things system  I started to do quite a bit of cross comparing. The ideas of dark hell spawned vampire cults that prey on weak kingdoms and fortress city states lurks in the background of both products. Alien vampire gods are not new ideas. Plague of Terror presents a few new wrinkles on the idea.

Biology of The Alien Vampire Hell spawn from The Locust Star
Upon page one fourteen  through one hundred sixteen of Crpyts and Things we are introduced to the 'Vampires Kings of the Locust Star'. The ideas here are simple: A.That Vampirism is an infection and that humans are turned into Thralls, B. victims of the Vampires die, High vampires are from other worlds and are strange alien creatures, those who evolve into Adepts are on their way to becoming completely alien creatures, Thralls can pass through human society with little issue until they feed, Vampires are bloodless immune to both poison and disease, and finally since they are alien creatures they are not harmed by sunlight.

 The God Complex Of Nosferatu

One of the wonderful ideas that is put forth in 'Plague of Terror' is idea of a vampire cult bound in both godhead and blood. This isn't new at all, instead we have vampire cults forming throughout literature and fiction. The vampire itself as alien fallen angel goes all the way back to the very foundation of the legends of these godless monsters. These creatures trip through history creating religions around themselves for their own twisted ends. They are alien monsters hell bent on creating groves of blood laden fruit just waiting for harvest.
'The Vampires of the Locust Star' from Crypts and Things are no different at all. Everything of their affair centers around the creation of the 'Elixir of Life' which seems the central pillar of their 'religion'  or is it cult. Cults that wait to be harvested for blood and belief.
Godhood connected with plagues goes back all the way to the specter of Pazuzu and their demonic ilk. The adventure possibilities are pretty endless when cycles of interstellar plague from the 'Locust Star' crosses over with the central theme of the vampire as alien other.
Could the coming of both Orlock and Locust Star Vampires show the coming of alien demonic beings from beyond the stars?

Alien Kingdoms of The Vampire Lords

The realms of the vampires throughout legend and history often seem almost alien to Earth. Kingdoms of blood draining alien monster just waiting for heroes and adventurers to stumble upon them. The death and destruction caused by a nest of vampires is incredible. The victims of the plagues of these creatures cause a thinning of the veil between 'the paranormal worlds' and Earth. The powers of Hell itself and Outer planar demons are free to roam. Various cycles of supernatural horror and terror seem to result.
Cities in ruin and whole communities are drained dry. Cults are actually food sources harvested at the whim of their alien vampire overlords.
This is a kingdom of phantoms, vampires, undead, and werewolves. The day brings final dissolution of the things of the night. But only for that night. This is a vastly different world from the more traditional games of Vampire or Kult or even OD&D.
This is a world affected by the ravages of the plagues of the vampire. A place of the damned and haunted. A place that might be swept away at dawn's light into the pages of someplace like Kult or Limbo.
A place where the living, half living, and undead are under the sway of both angels and demons.  Caught up between the Illusi
on and Death itself.

The VHS Realms of  The Vampire Lords

Running a 'balls to the walls' vampire lord campaign in the reality of Crypts and Things means that the PC's are going to have to be geared for 'Vampire slaying'. The physical is going to the prime attributes  White spell lists may help with a priest wizard. The grey wizard is going to get a work out and given the alien technology of the 'vampire lords' thieves will be in demand.
Barbarians and fighters tracking the ruined landscape are vital if not essential to success.

The ruined landscape of the kingdom of the vampires means travel by horse and walking possibly lots of it. Vampires including 'Count Orlock' seem to prefer the most inhospitable places where isolated villages of blood donor peasants can be farmed out at whim.

The 1d10 Vampire Lands Encounter Table
  1. Groups of refugee's fleeing the wrath of a local lord. Actually possessed by a demon who is covertly moving his herd of hosts elsewhere. They will attack as berserk and are armed with make shift weapons.
  2. A flock of low flying razor wings 1d20 of the bastard closing in for the attack.
  3. 1d10 raiders on horse back  3rd level fighters. 30% chance of mutations.
  4. A group of villagers burying a vampire victim. There is a 20% of the vampire victim animating.
  5. A small group of plague zombies stumbling through the dark. 1d8 zombies.
  6. A group of adventurers running from the local lord. They are on horse back. There's a 20% of them carrying plague
  7. A lone exorcist or wandering monk selling charms and telling stories. He knows most of the local legends. 4th level thief as well.
  8. A small wandering group of warrior nuns 3rd level on horse back armed with shot guns and blunderbusses.
  9. A victim of a vampire attack nearly dead and turned with a map of a local fortress.
  10. A giant vampire hybrid creature hunting for its master!  4 hit points, Armor Class 6, Damage 1d8 from its claws and horrid fangs!
Vampri Angelic Lords

Type: Other
Armor Class : 0
Hit Dice: 8/10/15
Attacks: Claw (1d12)
Razor wing (1d6)
Bite (1d4)
Saving Throw: 8/5/3
Special: Regenerates by drinking human blood or draining life force
Super humanly fast, Blood Rage, Fly, Possession,
Move : 19 by flight or foot
Challenge Level/XP : 22/5,000
These creatures are the alien head of the "Locust Star Vampires". They appear to be angels from myth and legend with black wings like crows. In actual fact they are uncaring predators whose planar ships drain planets of any and all life. These creatures are always 2nd level or better black wizards whose alien technology rapes and drains everything around them.Even using it soils the very soul of the person.
Their presence upon a surface of a world will cause reality to bend and melt around them. They are able to hide their presence by possessing one or more of the local life forms and blending into the society where they begin the formation of a  world spanning Vampiric cult. These things are formidable natural predators of the highest order and able to drain a human being of both life force a blood within seconds. Those so drained with be carriers of highly dangerous cosmic zombie plague.

Splatter Punk 70's & 80's Post Apocalyptic Horror Campaign Sundown Edition- Future Hunters 1986 Part one

Introduction
There are some movies that are balls to the wall action and adventure. This one isn't one of those. Instead in the category of so bad its good 'Future Hunters' comes damn close. The idea in the movie make very little sense but there's some stuff that can be used for Post Apocalyptic adventuring especially in what I'm planning.

The Spear of Destiny has shaped the lives of everyone that it touches. The whole movie's plot goes something like :

 Plot according to IMDB:
2025 A.D. A lone adventurer searches the post-nuclear wasteland for the most devastating, godless artifact in history. When he touches it, he is transported back in time to 1989 Los Angeles. Mortally wounded he requests a young couple to return the spear to its sheath and end its reign of evil.
This movie uses elements from every other movie from 1986. Which makes it prime candidate for editing into something actually useful.

'The Warlords of 1985'
This group of over 66 adventurers, raiders,  &  fighters controls most of the New Mexican desert with the 'Shrine of the Spear of Destiny'. This 'holy relic' grants the Warlords divine favor allowing the raiders incredible control over the region and its people against the forces of darkness and depravity.
The spear creates a 40 mile zone of safety for the warlords and their chosen vessels allowing them to rule with relative impunity and with an iron first.

The warlords also have access to a cache of military grade weaponry and leather armor as well as the protection of the shrine

.
Most of the Warlords are part of a world wide network of psychotic devil worshiping villains of the worst stripe.Anyone encountering a member of this cult is likely to be a second level fighter or better armed with 20th century weaponry or better. They have access to two tanks but these will be guarding the shrine housing the 'Spear of Destiny'

'The Spear of Destiny"

This is the spear head which pierced the side of Christ during the Crucifixion. The spear has a number of powers that according to legend are because of piercing the side of Christ. This include : Healing the sick, banishing demons, destroying the undead, having a divine aura, and much more.
This isn't that spear head. This is actually the false spear created after Christ died on the cross during the time of the twilight of the Roman empire.
This spear  head  radiates an 'unholy' aura keeping the forces of darkness at bay around the shrine but also attracts the most violent of men who must protect the spear. It is a +2 to hit and anyone hit by the spear head must make a save or be reduced to ashes within 1d4 rounds. The spear will also teleport its user through time and space allowing the fool to think that they are in another time and place. The spear is drawn to the most violent and dangerous breeds around. The spear can also extend an aura of the unholy which will cow any creatures or supernaturals within a forty mile radius.

Splatter Punk Campaign Rpg Influences - Tom Sutton One Of Connecticut's Comic Book Artist's Extraordinaire

Tomsuttonatwork.jpg

Once upon a time back in the 70's and 80's Carlton Comics produced some of the weird and out there titles for their audiences. They're the company who introduced me to HP Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith. Tom Sutton was one of their stable of artists and his work spoke volumes to me. According to Wiki :

"Thomas F. "Tom" Sutton (April 15, 1937 – May 1, 2002)[1] was an American comic bookartist who sometimes used the pseudonyms Sean Todd and Dementia. He is best known for his contributions to Marvel Comics and Warren Publishing's line of black-and-white horror-comics magazines, particularly as the first story-artist of the popular character Vampirella"

The monsters that Tom Sutton did are going be the way I'm imagining all of my Mythos monsters for the moment. Balls to the walls flat out horror
He also did quite a bit of stuff for Warren and Marvel. Locally he worked for the 'Boys From Derby'. Carlton Comics were solid back in the 70's. They had a nice range of titles and their supernatural lines were very dark (for kids comics) but it was Warren that was my 'adult' choose. However, Tom Sutton illustrated my imagination's darkest nightmares. For a DM it was pretty easy to tell a player that 'this' is the monster your PC is facing down.

Mr. Sutton was right in the heart of the Warren revolution and at the door when Marvel had its Monsterous Seventies period. Once again Wiki:
Sutton's first two comic-book stories appeared the same month. His first sale, "The Monster from One Billion B.C.", was published in Warren Publishing's black-and-white horror-comicsmagazine Eerie #11 (Sept. 1967), though it was originally commissioned for Famous Monsters of Filmland (where it was reprinted four months later). He also illustrated the five-page anthological Western story "The Wild Ones", written by Sol Brodsky, in Marvel's Kid Colt, Outlaw #137 (Sept. 1967). It was one of many Westerns he drew for the company, including the introduction of the short-lived feature "Renegades"—The Fugitive times four, in the Old West—in Western Gunfighters #1 (Aug. 1970).
As Sutton recalled his breaking into Marvel, editor-in-chief Stan Lee
...looked at the stuff that I had brought in, [which was] stuff that I had done in the service for Stars and Stripes in Tokyo. I think he was rather impressed by the fact that I had actually done a daily comic strip for two years. He didn’t get many people who had done that. ... He just reached over and he pulled off this huge pile of blank paper. And he said, 'OK, do me a couple of Westerns and I'll see you next week. Have fun.' I remember that very well. 'Have fun.'[3]

Sutton soon developed a trademark frantic, cartoony style that, when juxtaposed on dramatic narratives, gave his work a vibrant, quirky dynamism. That distinctive style helped establish the popular supernatural character Vampirella from her first story, "Vampirella of Draculona", written by Forrest J. Ackerman, with costume design by artist Trina Robbins,[9] in Vampirella #1 (Sept. 1969).[10] Later, with writer Archie Goodwin, Sutton helped transition Vampi from cheeky horror hostess to serious dramatic character in the 21-page story "Who Serves the Cause of Chaos?" in issue #8 (Nov. 1970, reprinted in color in Harris Comics' 1995 Vampirella Classicsseries).[3][10]
Though well-suited to horror stories, Sutton was also admired for his work on such science fiction series as Marvel's Planet of the Apesmagazine and First Comics' GrimJack and Squalor, and for the humor title Not Brand Ecch, on which he appeared in nearly every issue with parodies of Marvel's own characters.[10] He was not especially equipped to do superheroes, either by art style or temperament, once calling them "fascist".[11] While he lent a hand very occasionally, Sutton stayed mostly on Marvel's supernatural heroes: Werewolf by Night, Ghost Rider, Doctor Strange (in the 1970s series, plus Baron Mordo backup stories in the 1980s Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme). With writer Steve Englehart, penciler Sutton introduced the new furrily transformed X-Men character the Beast, who starred in a superhero/horror feature in Amazing Adventures #11-15 (March-Sept. 1972).[3][10]
A series in the 1970s black-and-white comics magazine Planet of the Apes, a licensed spin-off of the movie series, done with writerDoug Moench, was "recognized by many as Sutton's best", said comics historian and columnist Tom Spurgeon:
Together, they created the 'Future Chronicles' stories for Marvel's Planet of the Apes magazine. [For this] enormously elaborate and cleverly designed fantasy saga set on the world featured in the movies, Sutton worked with oversized originals to better show off his mixed-media work and allow for meticulous detail. The result was a lush, moody, and striking fantasy story to stand with any in mainstream comics history. ' He really made the work a joy, and pure fun,' Moench told [The Comics] Journal. ' This guy was so into the "Future Chronicles", he wanted to put so much detail into it, he worked on these gigantic boards. It was [a] black-and-white [magazine], so it was already bigger than regular comics pages. Then he did that series twice up, these enormous things that would cover my desk. Right there it made it something special, the sheer physical size of it. The enthusiasm you could see in every brushstroke just made it so exciting'.[2]

I used to walk down to the corner Dairy Mart with my weekly allowance and after dividing it in half. I'd get a couple of Carlton Comics. If I was really lucky Warren's Eerie or Creepy might be available. But it was always the Sutton covers that grabbed me.

Sutton had his own demons to deal with as well as those he drew. Again Wiki:

Original art splash page, Werewolf by Night #9 (Sept. 1973), one of two issues Sutton penciled and inked
For the horror-oriented Warren, Sutton drew dozens of stories early in his career. He moonlighted for Warren competitor Skywald Publications, drawing the Frankenstein-novel sequel "Frankenstein, Book II" (serialized in Psycho magazine #3-6, May, 1971 - May, 1972)—using the pseudonym "Sean Todd" (writer-penciler Sutton and inkers Dan Adkins, Jack Abel and Sutton himself), to avoid the wrath of publisher James Warren. A separate story inPsycho #4, written by Sutton and drawn by him and Syd Shores, was credited as "Larry Todd" (writer) and "David Cook" (art). This was the result of someone having inadvertently inserted the name of real-life writer Larry Todd rather than usual pseudonym Sean Todd.[12]
For Skywald's short-lived line of color comics, Sutton wrote and drew stories for the Westerntitle Butch Cassidy and the horror title The Heap (no relation to the 1940s-50s Hillman Periodicals character later revived by Eclipse Comics). He drew Marvel's similar muck-monster Man-Thing as eight-page installments in the omnibus series Marvel Comics Presents during the late 1980s.[10]

Later life and career [edit]

Living in Mystic, Connecticut, at some point,[13] Sutton in the mid-1970s to early 1980s wrote and drew horror stories for the Derby, Connecticut-based Charlton Comics, including for such titles as Ghost Manor, Midnight Tales, Monster Hunters and The Many Ghosts of Doctor Graves, also painting covers for some of these titles. In the mid-1980s, Sutton drew suspense stories for DC Comics' House of Secrets and House of Mystery which included the "I…Vampire" feature with writer J. M. DeMatteis.[14] He penciled virtually all 56 issues of DC's licensed series Star Trek (1984-1988),[10] a period in which, he said, "I know I was becoming an alcoholic."[15] The desire to continue drawing, he said, overcame the urge to drink:
[Y]ou can be drunk as a fucking skunk and there’s a little voice that goes off in your head that says, “Would you like to draw pictures, or would you like to be drunk face down in the gutter? Choose one.” Those are the only two chances you’ve got. I had my own little miracle. I thank God for it to this day. I’m not making a big thing out of it. The only reason I even talk about it is the fact that I think there are other people out there who need to know this. That you can save yourself. You go to AA, and eh. I couldn’t stick with AA. Other people, that’s a great place for them.[15] ... I ran out of bars. One by one, and there must have been a dozen in Newberryport, I was a persona non grata at ever single one of them [and] ... I would never sit home and drink. I had to have an audience.[16]
Late in life, Sutton did commercial art for New England ad agencies, and under his "Dementia" pseudonym, which he adopted in 1994, he drew for Fantagraphics' Eros Comix line of adult comics.[3] He was also a painter who had gallery showings of his bar-scene canvases.[3] A limited-edition portfolio of six H.P. Lovecraft-inspired fantasy prints, The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, was produced in 1978 and reprinted in the 2002 book Graphic Classics: H. P. Lovecraft.

 The Carlton OSR Angle

I've been pulling from my 'locally grown' artists and influences. I've grabbed many a Carlton comic plot and adapt it for OD&D, Chill, Call of Cthulhu, World of Darkness, and much more. Tom Sutton drew how I imagined the Mythos looked like along with the vampires, werewolves, and the demons of darkness that came out of Derby Connecticut

For a balls to the walls Crypts and Things campaign 'The Carlton Influence is going to be dripping from the adventures. I never got the chance to thank Tom Sutton for all the great stuff he did. There's a sea side city state named in his honor in my campaign world.

Ghosts, demon winds, and Lovecraftian horrors from the deepest darkest recesses of VHS hell are coming! Tom Sutton's finger print echos through my imagination. More coming up!

Ecology of Dave Hargrave's Exterminator Series of War Droids For The Splatter Punk 70's & 80's Post Apocalyptic Horror Campaign

From "The Vault of the Weaver's"  Caliban  adventure copy right Emperor's Choice Games
Ecology of Dave Hargrave's Exterminator Series of  War Droids

"The Exterminator war droid looked down on to the smoking remains of the latest series of adventurers or targets without pity or remorse. The smoking remains burnt merrily to themselves speaking volumes of warning to others who would venture into the confines of Caliban. The "Flying Dutchmen of Megadungeons" winged its way between the planes. The wardroid slapped its clip home into the 50 caliber weapon and began its rounds again and wait. Waited for the next batch of fools to cross its path and its guns. It took a certain grim satisfaction in a job well done. Even as it whirled on its treads conscious of someone or something waiting it from far off. "
The Exterminator series of Cybernetic Organisms From  A Future Darkly Introduction

The Exterminator series of cybernetic organisms isn't simply a collection of devices or government sponsored assassins moving across the face of this scarred Earth of ours. The Exterminator series is one of the most important cyborgs ever to roll off of an assembly line.  The "Exterminator Force" created these super efficient killing machines for the purpose of removing certain genetic defects that resulted in mutations that were incredibly dangerous to future generations.
A number of these modules were were lost throughout time and space to many different alternative Earths and timelines. These cybernetic killers were drawn from the ranks of the desperate and the damned. Sometimes condemned political criminals and sometimes ordinary citizens were encased in the shell of the Exterminators.
These cyborgs were made for doing two things: To act as assassins and to remove the threat of genetic mutations in all its forms giving mankind a chance to survive against the coming onslaught.

Anatomy of An Exterminator Cyborg

Each and every Exterminator series robot is a blue green spindly humanoid war droid body. Its head consists of an oval over sized set of sensors built into a suite and a mouthpiece that resembles an aviator's oxygen mask.

Exterminator cyber systems are usually linked to advanced AI personalities that actually control the robotic bodies up a one hundred fifty miles. The human minds are put into the robotic bodies because because only the "human killer instinct" is needed to create the perfect robotic killers.
These robots were used extensively in overpopulated alternative Earth future timelines in the Warrenverse.
These robot use conventional military weaponry and specialized Exterminator  weapon systems. This innovative cybernetic systems were used in both military and private sector security systems as well as black ops weapons shop. These borgs are complete total conversion organisms. The Exterminator systems are immune to many forms of magic and psionic abilities.

The human torso, nerve clusters, spinal column, eyes, skull, minor skeletal structures, and any other human elements  are incorporated where needed.
All cybernetic systems are there to offer computer council, also assure loyalty to the US government.  They also have massive bio storage memory capacity and able to have real time human experience memory interaction.

They have both advanced optics and sensor systems. They have high supernatural threat assessment systems and complete mutant extermination data bases.
The first of the Exterminator series was launched in its alternative timeline future on February of 2014.
The second of the Exterminator series of cyborgs is identical to the first except that he is attached to a tank like vehicle which also has computer systems counter measures, advanced AI assist, and advanced communications systems.  The Exterminator series was in operation for three hundred and eighty years.

Variations on a The Exterminator Platform
There is speculation that the Exterminator series was the basis for the "Bakshi Peace Project Android Units". These cybernetic systems developed by the "Exterminator Works" scientists also found their way into the advanced android systems of the Peace units.

Leaps in the private medical and security sector in the alternative 2014 came as a result of the government sponsored cyber soldier programs. "Adjusting the alien vampire threat" became a top priority during this time.  As time went on the Exterminator units were programmed to work with minor mutated beings against Alpha level threats.
" Project Mandroid" developed parallel with the various incarnations of the Exterminator Cyborgs. This more human variation on the technology allowed a greater platform for Quisi civilian and and private sector armed forces. This allowed cybernetic conversion of wounded armed forces or condemned criminals into the Mandroid units.

The Mandroid units paved the way for "switch and go" weapons options, and extensive off road capable tank tread platforms. These weigh in excess of 3000 pounds or more.  Because of the greater human to machine index on the Mandroids there is a much higher empathy level in these cybernetic organisms. There is also the built in obsolesce factor. These units would only last one hundred years as their human organic parts wore out.

The real innovation to the Mandroids is the direct mind link interface. This allowed "direct memory" downloads onto any human computer from the human mind of the cyborg. This was a direct result of studies conducted on a captured Exterminator frame.

Because of the direct memory interface technology, the Mandroids came with a complete data base of human culture and history. This made them perfect time space explorers. They paved the way for later improvements into the Exterminator series of cybernetic machines

In the post apocalyptic horror world of 2394 the Exterminators and even their variations saw extensive action. They were used against all types of Alpha level mutant supernatural threats from vampires, werewolves, even some minor Lovecraftian horror races. The "Exterminators" were the perfect killing weapons. A final nail into the coffins of the so called mutant menace.

Behind the helm of the Exterminator War Droids

The Vault of the Weaver contains monsters not normally found within the Arduin rule books . These "boss monsters" are several grades above the traditional monsters of "Bloody Arduin". The war droids seem to be computer controlled hit men from the same alternative worlds as the Warrenverse . So I simply married the character created by author Bill DuBay and artist Paul Neary.
The Exterminator One unit appeared in "Eerie #69, in 1974 and is trade marked to Warren publishing Co.
The Mandroid is from The Elimators film. Since I'm doing the Horror VHS campaign I figured this was a perfect fit.

I wanted to squeeze in "Peace" from the Ralph Bakshi's movie Wizards  in there someplace. Obviously Peace is copyrighted  and trade marked to its owner. I have nothing but the greatest respect for Mr.Bakshi.
No doubt your wondering how the Wardroid cyborg got into the wandering dungeon of "Caliban" in the first place . Its a pretty tough call, how the cyborg got into there. How he gets out is the real rub though.
Obviously  this is a fan created blog entry. This blog entry is for entertainment purposes only there are attempt to violate the copyright or trade mark infringement of the original copy holder's. work. Everything else is a result of my own warped mind.
